Look At This Fucking Statue: The Motherland Calls (“for heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad”), located in Volgograd, Russia. Sculpted by Yevgeny Vuchetich in 1967 it stands 279 fucking feet tall.
Look at the scale! Those are people at the bottom. And because it was built on wetlands, and they apparently decided not to attach it to the foundation, that massive stone woman is SLOWLY FALLING OVER. (via)
Still blowin’ me away.
Never seen this, but did see Yevgeny Vuchetich’s other one in Kiev.
It’s only 203ft high itself, but with the base, is actually 335ft tall. First I saw was driving into town, and seeing this overlooking the whole thing. Complete Sci-fi scenery moment, all Deus Ex-isms.
I’ll suspect, that moment lead to the drive for a lot of the quiet use-of-Ukraine in my work.
